How do I handle tech issues that come up during a Live workshop?
Tech hiccups happen, even to the pros. The key is to prepare ahead of time and stay calm in the moment. Here’s how:
- Have a solid backup plan. This could include having a second device ready to go, an alternate internet source like a hotspot, and even a backup slide deck (PDF or printable version) in case screen sharing doesn’t work.
- Test your setup in advance. Do a dry run the day before your live workshop. Check your mic, camera, slides, and internet connection. Bonus points if you test at the same time of day you’ll be going Live, to catch any surprises.
- Use a tech checklist. Write down every step you take to set up and go live, from logging into Zoom to hitting “record.” Keep it nearby so you don’t have to rely on memory.
- If something goes wrong, stay grounded. Take a breath, acknowledge the issue with grace (e.g. “Looks like we’ve hit a quick tech snag... thanks for hanging in there with me!”), and then either fix it or move forward. People are incredibly understanding when you stay calm and confident.
- Remember: You’re the guide, not the tech support. Focus on delivering value, not perfection. Your audience is there for your expertise, not flawless tech.
